The Genocidal Negative and the Cultural Matrix of the Object: Towards a Psychoanalysis of Hypercomplexity

Abstract

The contemporary clinic is indebted to a hypercomplex view of the dynamics of the analytic pair. This view considers not only the demands of internal work, integration, the phantasmatic, libidinal and object developments, the intra-subjective and inter-subjective elaborations, those arising from creative co-construction present in transference-countertransference, but also the demands arising from absence, the phenomena of the negative, as well as extending the place of the unconscious, repressed, and projected, to the unconscious of action, family, and group.

            In the proposed view, the internal matrix where intra-subjective experience occurs – the emotional and cultural environment in which the object resides within the subject – as well as the family and community inter-subjective matrix – where relationships and affective bonds are organized and perpetuated – represent the negative scenario of the object. At an advanced stage of the analytical process, the couple accesses those matrices, the encrypted story, through the analysis of the negative of the transference-countertransference relationship.

            The elaboration of hypercomplexity allows for the empowerment of subjectivity: personal and family stories and the historical context of the group. The instance of this approach is illustrated through a clinical case, in which the suicidal gesture represents the positive side of the absent negative: the context of ancestral genocide.
